Familias Sanas/Healthy Families Initiative
The goal of this initiative is to strengthening the families by providing emotional, social and educational support to improve their quality of life in the areas of financial management, healthy relationships and physical, emotional and environmental health.
Some of the Programs under this initiative include: Casas Sanas, Ninos Sanos/Healthy Homes, Healthy Kids, Elders Program and Domestic violence Program.
Casas Sanas, Ninos Sanos- Healthy Homes, Healthy Children a joint project of the Centro de Apoyo Familiar (CAF) and the JSI Center for Environmental Health Studies and funded by the EPA in which 10 women from 10 churches in Lawrence, MA have been trained to do outreach and education with people in their churches on factors in their homes that affect children's health such as lead paint and asthma triggers. With support from CAF, JSI, and the Asociación de Ministros Evangelicos de Lawrence (AMEDAL), the
Promotoras conducted workshops for over 400 families and 500 men, women, and children. The Promotoras received certificates of appreciation from EPA Regional Administrator H. Curtis Spaulding in Boston, MA for their work. At the event the Promotoras shared their personal stories and successes in conducting the workshops.
Elderly Group Nueva Esperanza- CAF in partnership with local churches provide emotional, social and educational support to low to moderate income senior residents from the city of Lawrence to prevent isolation and depression by providing weekly educational activities and workshops in the areas of financial management, healthy relationships and physical, emotional and environmental health. A routine of physical exercise is part of the agenda in each program’s day, a coffee time with a healthy breakfast, a reflection, games, music and a number of activities designed to motivate creativity, learning and enthusiasm among the elders.
- In the area of health participants learn how to implement and adopt strategies to protect their physical, emotional and environmental health.
- In the area of financial management some of the topics discussed include credit rebuilding, credit cards, predatory lending and scams, and assets building and more.
- Participants engage in a number of activities to activate their talents and creativity including cultural and generational events and projects that goes from creating a recipe book to a home remedies booklet.
